On Tuesday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed a bill into law that prohibits sleeping in public spaces.
The legislation bans sleeping, camping, and long-term sheltering on property owned by the state or local government.
Violators could be issued a Class C misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
First-time violators who do not qualify for emergency detention are to be given a warning and information on relevant shelter and support services.
Critics say it criminalizes being homeless and would contribute to already overcrowded jails.
The law goes into effect on July 1.
