The mystery odor that has been lingering around Evansville and caused concern to residents since Monday has been solved.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the odor is coming from O’Bryan Barrel Company.
They clean and recondition empty barrels for reuse in the food industry.
They recently received around 350 empty barrels that previously contained Mercaptan, which is used to odorize natural gas to identify leaks and has a rotten egg, sulfur-like odor.
Hot water used to remove residue in the barrels released odors into the atmosphere, which will remain until weather conditions dissipate.
