As part of Indiana’s new Smart SNAP initiative, starting January 1, sugary drinks and candy will no longer be eligible to purchase with SNAP benefits.
This includes soda, energy drinks, sports drinks like Gatorade, and sweetened iced tea.
What’s still allowed is drinks with milk or milk substitutes, drinks sweetened only with real fruit or vegetable juice, Pedialyte, Ice cream, potato chips, and actual fruit.
The government’s classification of “candy” is still unclear.
