Evansville firefighters responded to the 2900 block of West Virginia Street a little after 11 last night.
They say heavy smoke coming from an apartment building there.
It apparently started in the downstairs middle apartment’s utility area and spread to upper apartments.
Firefighters called in another company to do battle with the blaze, and it took about an hour to knock it down.
Investigators ruled the fire accidental electrical.
One resident of a downstairs apartment escaped with a pet and is being assisted by he Red Cross.
