A Spencer County woman wants to change the law regarding drowsy drivers.
In September 2023, her mother, Debra Scherer, died in a head-on collision on State Route 66 by a driver who nodded off behind the wheel.
Currently, Indiana law only prosecutes a driver who was speeding or passing.
The driver that struck her mother wasn’t doing either and was only fined $11.50.
She is hoping to grab the attention of lawmakers by starting a petition.
New Jersey and Arkansas are the only states that have drowsy driving laws.
