Last month Governor Andy Beshear requested a federal disaster declaration after six people died during severe storms over the Memorial Day Weekend.
It was approved on Tuesday.
Hopkins County Judge Executive Jack Whitfield says the declaration was delayed too long.
The county has already spent $2.3 million picking up debris.
Officials would like to see some funding go towards grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and loans to cover uninsured losses.
