Local Midas Muffler locations are pitching in to help deter the theft of catalytic converters.
Theft of the devices has gone up 400 percent since 2019, and they’re expensive to replace, often not covered by insurance.
They contain several precious metals and thieves can turn a quick profit selling them.
Three local Midas shops have joined with law enforcement to etch or paint car owner’s license plate numbers on the converter for free through Saturday.
