Evansville has had an increase in abandoned building fires this winter.
City fire officials say they are linked to people trying to find a way to stay warm.
When temperatures drop, shelters can’t accommodate everyone.
Local experts say this creates a significant problem for Evansville, as the city’s homeless population has gradually increased.
Before the pandemic there were 488 people living in shelters or on the streets.
That number increased to over 500 as of January.
