A new bill was introduced this week to the Indiana General Assembly that would allow an extended “cooling down period” for suspected domestic violence abusers.
Senate Bill 158 would have the abuser sit in jail for 24 hours instead of the standard 8.
The 16 hour extension would give victims more time to gather belongings, and find a safe place to stay.
If the suspected abuser has a prior criminal stalking charge, they could also be charged with a Level 6 Felony.
The bill received a 6-2 vote from the Senate Committee on Tuesday.
