The Evansville Fire Department was called to an apartment fire after the resident fell asleep while his stove was on.
This happened on the 500 block of South New York Avenue just after midnight on Sunday.
The man was awakened by the warmth of the fire.
He was not successful at putting out the blaze so he left his apartment.
Fire officials say the damage was contained to the kitchen and has been ruled an accident.
