It was a close call for a Sturgis man trapped in a grain bin Wednesday afternoon.
Fire officials say Doug Omer fell into one of his bins, becoming stuck after he hit a “hot spot”.
That’s a pocket of air under the grain, that can suck a person down like quicksand.
Emergency crews thought about cutting a hole in the bin, but changed their mind, afraid the corn would shift.
They chose to use a life saving device called a grain vacuum.
Authorities say Omer was conscious, breathing and in good spirits during the five hour rescue.
Around 4:30 he was loaded onto a medical helicopter and taken to a hospital.
