A Posey County deputy sheriff is fighting for his life in an Evansville hospital.
41 year old Deputy Bryan Hicks responded with other officers to a welfare check at 612 Short Street in New Harmony a little before 7pm Saturday.
While deputies and the New Harmony town marshal were still outside, thee homeowner opened fire from within.
Officers returned fire, striking the homeowner, 70 year old former town marshal and reserve deputy Paul Wilshire several times.
Deputy Hicks was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound to the head and was in ICU in critical condition.
