An investigation got underway late last week at the Evansville Department of Parks and Recreation .
Chief Billy Bolin says the Financial Crimes Unit of the department is heading up the probe.
The city administration asked for the investigation.
On Friday night, the Evansville Police Department confirmed the city administration requested officers to look into an “unordinary” situation within the parks department.
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said in a Monday afternoon press conference that it started last Tuesday when the city’s finance department told him about two questionable invoices from the Department of Parks and Recreation.
As the investigation progressed, officers discovered five more “questionable” invoices, making seven in all.
Mayor Winnecke calls them “inappropriate.”
The Mayor says, as of the moment, there is no missing city money, but he says an outside agency will be hired for a forensic review of the department.
Mayor Winnecke has accepted the resignation of Parks and Recreation Executive Director Brian Holtz.
Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer will assume management of the Parks Department for the time being.
