Texas Raiders is a B-17 that saw combat duty in the waning days of World War II and in the Korean Conflict.
The 76 year old aircraft is owned by the Commemorative Air Force, a Texas organization that locates and preserves historic aircraft.
The plane is visiting the Evansville Wartime Museum offering demonstration flights this weekend.
It’s noisy.
The four Pratt and Whitney rotary engines put up quite a noise as they start up and settle down to a powerful roar.
I sat in the Navigator’s seat, just aft of the bombardier.
Not a bad seat.
I could watch the massive propellers turn with Evansville below as a back drop
The 30 minute flight was enjoyable and left me awestruck over the history of this place, named Texas Raiders, and hundreds of others like it that flew combat missions.
