The Henderson County Detention Center is making use of new science for catching illegal substances that may come into the facility through the mail.
It uses the same technology used by airport security, and can detect even trace amounts of illegal substances.
Officials say contaminated mail has been a reoccurring problem for the last couple of years. Inmates have received letters that appeared to be from children, but are actually papers soaked in narcotic drugs. Jail staff members say they won’t use the new machine on every piece of mail. It will be a randomized approach or wherever they see fit.
