Motorists using northbound Riverside Drive have had to detour around a sinkhole since July 15.
Spokeswoman Ella Johnson-Watson says it’s taking some time to fix because of the nature of the problem.
She says utility workers arrived at the scene of the sinkhole only to find that it wasn’t a simple void under the street. I
n this case, a 24-inch clay sewer pipe had collapsed.
Making things worse, the collapsed pipe was quite deep in the ground, and two iron pipes crossed above it making access to equipment difficult.
Watson says the contractor firm Deig Brothers has been called in to correct the situation, and the problem should be cleared up and the street back to normal by close of business July 30.
