The Evansville Fire Department is working to put an end to arson cases.
Last year, 30% of the fires EFD responded to were believed to have been set intentionally, with only two arrests made.
Evansville Fire Chief Tony Knight says arson is a very detailed crime.
There are several different aspects you have to prove.
One of those is motive.
There hasn’t been an EFD fire investigator certified in law enforcement since 2019.
The department is bringing that certification back, starting with Battalion Chief Eric Gentry.
He will act as a liaison between EPD and EFD with the goal of catching more arsonists.
