State Senator Vaneta Becker has a bill headed to the floor that will make damaging a fire suppression sprinkler in a jail a felony.
It has the support of Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson who spoke to a Senate hearing Tuesday.
He told lawmakers that those sprinklers cost $500 a pop to repair.
Last year, 24 of them were damaged.
Robinson said if inmates keep racking up felonies they could be liable for an habitual offender charge.
Senate Bill 23 now goes to the Senate Floor for further action.
