Airbnb homeowners in Owensboro, who owe transient room tax, could be fined hundreds of dollars.
Last year the city expanded its four percent transient room tax ordinance to include short-term rented homes and rooms.
Most homeowners were not aware that they were responsible for paying taxes.
The consequences for not paying up could mean a monthly fine, and in extreme cases, 30 days in jail.
According to the Airbnb website, there are 80 rental properties in Owensboro.
