Evansville fire crews responded to the Embassy Apartments around 1:45 Sunday morning.
A building that housed open activities at one end and a laundry facility at the other had flames coming from the roof.
Investigators determined a fire had been built in an old fireplace covered with sheet metal to stop it from being used.
But, a fire had not been extinguished before reinstalling the cover which allowed the fire to get into the attic space via the chimney which was in disrepair.
It took fire crews an hour to put the fire out.
