A Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy was killed on Monday while transporting an inmate to a medical appointment.
Shortly before 11:30 am, Deputy John Durm was assaulted inside the sally port of the Adult Detention Center.
The deputy was transported to the hospital and later died from his injuries.
He had been with the department for 38 years.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers took the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Orlando Mitchell, into custody and charged him with murder.
