Great team of veteran Fall Festival tasters and a rookie! (But she ate like a pro)!
(L-R Jill Trautvetter, Hannah Rodocker (first time taster,) Kurt Tillman and DJB.
We tasted 35 booths on Franklin today. Let that sink in for a second. Booths 36 – 71. Here’s what we found:
Booth 36 Twin Towers.
It’s the Hot Ham and Cheese sandwich. For old timers who remember Sam the Ham Man at Fall Festival, Twin Towers has picked up the tradition. Very tasty and spot on to the original Sam.
Booth 37 Mt Pleasant Church
Deep Fried Oatmeal Pie. What’s not to like? Little Debby approved.
38 USI Art Club
Street Corn. Booth 38 has for years been the corn on the cob booth. But due to supply issues the last two years have been difficult to acquire enough corn on the cob needed for Fall Festival. So this year, something new and spectacular! It’s a street fair favorite all over the place and now it’s on Franklin Street. It’s Walking Elote because it’s in a bowl! If you try anything new at this year’s festival, try USI Art Club’s Mexican Street Corn.
Booth 39 West Side Kiwanis
Diane Masterson served us up a piping hot Smoreadilla. New item this year and extra yummy!
Booth 40 River Bend Association
Shrimp and Grits made steps away in the kitchen of River Bend Association where it’s a regular dish! Bubba Gump thumbs up.
Booth 41 Grace and Peace Lutheran Church
The world famous Donut Bank Burger. The original and best. It’s all they sell and they sell a ton of them.
Booth 42 Armstrong Recreation Center
Pecan Pie. Homemade through and through – crust too. Excellent small pie that’s still sharable.
Booth 43 Corpus Christi Church
Sausage Burger. It’s the Chuck Wagon booth, one of the most recognized on Franklin every Fall Festival and their Sausage Burger is a must have festival treat for thousands. Simply the best (proven in a WIKY blind taste test a few years ago).
Booth 44 St Joe’s Knights of St John
Traditional, delicious, thick sliced German Bologna sandwich. With pepper jack cheese. Duh.
Booth 45 BSA Troop 374
Scoutmaster’s Chili won the WIKY Golden Acorn Award last year for Best of the Festival. Yeah, it’s that good. This year we tried their chicken wings. Deep fried to perfection with a nice drizzle of sweetness. Spicy is available too.
Booth 46 Evansville Lutheran School
Smoked Turkey Leg. This is a group that I think is doing it correctly. They sell smoked turkey legs and water. That’s it. The most successful booths on Franklin specialize and concentrate their energies in moving a lot of whatever it is. So, if you want a turkey leg, you go to booth 46. Old Town Butcher Shoppe does the smokin’.
Booth 47 Evansville Racing Pigeon Club
Butterbeer Ice Cream Bar. OK Hogwarts students, let’s meet in Hogsmeade for a Butter Beer Ice Cream Bar. If you’ve been to a Harry Potter theme park and had an ice cold butter beer then you’ll be pleased with the authentic flavor. Made locally.
Booth 48 Salem Heusler
Homemade Ice Cream with Fudge. Made by their dairy farmer pastor (yes, it’s “pastorized”) from cows he knows personally. Old time taste from an old family recipe.
Booth 49
GOP of Vanderburgh County
Deer Chili. Yep, venison chili that’s really good. If you’re expecting a gamey taste you’ll be disappointed. Great flavor from what must be corn fed deer.
Booth 51 Forest Hills Wesleyan Youth
Chicken and Dumplins. All homemade including the dumplins rolled every morning with love. So good.
Booth 52 Harrison High School Instrumental Music
Gator Balls. Homemade with gator, beef and pork. Very tasty. Gator meat sourced from Full Moon.
Booth 53 Simpson UMC
No Zombie Sliders this year but Loaded Tater Tots gets the job done. Perfectly crispy tots.
Booth 54 TTT Christian Youth Ministries
Hand dipped Corn Dogs. Lots of Pronto Pups on Franklin but the Corn Dog is getting harder to find. This is the Corn Dog you’re looking for at Fall Festival. Hand dipped with a terrific frank from Farm Boy. Oh yeah.
Booth 55 Salem UMC
BBQ Parfait. A newer Fall Festival favorite, this one’s got it right. Most excellent with pulled pork, hot mashers, cheese and sauce.
Booth 56 and 57 West Side Catholic St Agnes and Sacred Heart
Had the BBQ Split (think banana split construction but with BBQ goodness) at from St Agnes and the best Pronto Pup on Franklin (proven by two blind taste tests in recent years). It’s the definitive Fall Festival Pronto Pup.
Booth 58 Reitz Instrumental Band Boosters
French Waffles. The original unique deep fried delicate sweet treat on Franklin Street. If you only try one thing new at Fall Festival this year, try the French Waffles from Reitz.
Booth 59 Life Choices Maternity and Youth Home
Piggy Legs. New item this year. Long time supplier of Piggy Toes, they’ve moved on to Piggy Legs. Bacon basking in brown sugar tastiness. They’ve chosen the better part of the pig.
Booth 60 Another Chance for Animals
No food here but taking donations for helping out area critters.
Booth 61 Lambda Chi Alpha USI
Philly Cheese. How good? Don’t be daunted by a long line. It’s so worth it.
62 Cleaves Memorial CME Church
Chess Pie. Multi award winner from a family recipe that positively melts in your mouth. (Excellent mutton available here, too).
63 Alpha Omega Psi USI
Stromboli. Internationally renowned and off the charts killer. Another former Fall Festival champ.
64 Phi Delta Theta USI
Deep Fried Cookie Dough. This could be the very reason the Fall Festival exists.
65 Reitz Varsity Scholarship Club (The R-Men)
Miller’s Mac Bowl. New item this year and it’s stunning. Superb pulled pork and sauce layered in rich and creamy mac and cheese. Eat some as soon as possible.
66 Northwoods Redeemer Fellowship
Walking Tacos. A favorite on Franklin but now in a new presentation. Check it out – Farm Boy ordered these to make the single most comfortable walking taco ever!
Booth 67 St Peters UMC
Blackberry Pie. Made from scratch with fresh fruit daily. Apple, peach and cherry are waiting for you as well.
Booth 68 North High School Marching Band
New this year at the go-to funnel cake booth: Smores Funnel Cake. It’s a breakthrough in smores technology.
Booth 69 Sigma Alpha Epsilon UE
West Sider Walking Taco. What makes it a West Sider? Grippos, natch. Outstanding.
Booth 71 Hadi Motor Corps and Mariners
Persimmon Pudding. Homemade and new only last year. Cleanse your palette and hit another 35 booths. Delicate flavor and thoroughly refreshing.
Big thanks to our WIKY Tasting Team Sponsor again this year, Farm Boy!
