Indiana Landmarks, an organization that saves historic places, gave Lyles Station a grant worth $40,000.
They will use the money to help with restoration of the Joseph Lucas house.
He was the principal at the school for 38 years.
Lyles Station was one of Indiana’s early black settlements and is located in Gibson County.
The community of 600 people was destroyed in the great flood of 1913.
The schoolhouse now operates as a museum and learning center.
