Frankfort police officers were in Mayfield early yesterday morning helping out with tornado concerns.
They were conducting extra patrol of the Mayfield/Graves County Fairgrounds during the predawn hours when the facility was closed to the public.
At about 3:30am an armed person approached the officers and fired multiple shots at them.
The officers returned fie an the subject was hit.
He was taken to a Mayfield hospital and pronounced dead.
Kentucky State Police have been called in to investigate, which is normal protocol in an officer-involved shooting.
