The headlines read, “The Night It Rained Tears”.
It was forty-four years ago today that the plane carrying the University of Evansville basketball team crashed, killing all 29 on board.
The team was on its way to to play against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro.
The only member of the Purple Aces that wasn’t on the plane that night was 18 year old freshman David Furr.
He was out for the season with an ankle injury.
Two weeks later he and his younger brother were killed in a car accident.
A memorial known as the “Weeping Basketball’ is located on the school’s campus.
