Story by Jay Zimmer.
It’s gone.
Amid glaring flashes of light and rumbling sound, the 420 Main Building collapsed upon itself Sunday morning. In mere seconds, the building that has epitomized the downtown Evansville skyline was reduced to a cloud of dust and a pile of rubble. The long-awaited demolition of the former Old National Bank headquarters building took place by implosion just after 7:00am. The bank occupied the building’s first floor from its opening in 1971 until it moved to its own riverfront building in 2009. The swanky Petroleum Club — the meeting and dining spot for Evansville movers and shakers — occupied the two top floors. Final cleanup of the debris will take another few weeks.
