On Saturday, August 21, 2021 at approximately 6:00 a.m. an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center was discovered unresponsive.
The confinement officer assigned to the booking area where the inmate, Duane Garry Jr. of Evansville, IN was discovered immediately called for assistance. Sheriff’s Office medical staff responded to the booking cell and began administering CPR. Medics from the Evansville Fire Department and American Medical Response (AMR) then arrived to assist. At approximately 6:30 a.m. resuscitation efforts were stopped and the subject was pronounced deceased.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office was then notified and responded to the Vanderburgh County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Section is investigating the death, although no foul play is suspected. The inmate was checked periodically throughout the night and was found unresponsive during morning inmate roll call count.
The Coroner’s Office will schedule an autopsy.
