Vanderburgh County sheriff Dave Wedding has an idea for a temporary jail expansion that will cost a fraction of the $89 million price tag fo a new jail extension.
He told 14 news that his idea calls for an addition connected to the exiting jail with an different interior design.
It’s all because of constant overcrowding at the existing jail.
The present jail opened in 2006 and was designed to house about 550 inmates.
The average daily population in 2019 was over 800.
County lawmakers haven’t signed off on Wedding’s suggestions as yet.
