On September 1, 2020 at 8 pm, Evansville will be joining with the #WeMakeEvents organization and over 1500 other venues nationwide, and light venues red to raise public awareness in support of the live events sector. This event will be held on the plaza in front of the Ford Center, and is meant to bring much needed attention to the fact that the events industry was the first to be shutdown by COVID19, and will be the last to return.
The live events industry, which has been closed since March, faces an economic crisis with no idea of when events will happen again. Live events employ over 12 million people and contribute over $1 trillion annually to the US economy. Over 95% of live events have been cancelled due to COVID-19 causing over 77% of people in the industry to lose 100% of their income, including 97% of contract workers. The live events sector includes not only the artists, but all the people behind the scenes that consumers don’t necessarily see.
Anyone who works in the live entertainment sector locally is invited to the plaza of the Ford Center to help raise awareness of this movement and to help light up our now dark venues. Please wear masks and maintain social distancing during this event.
