Democrat Amy McGrath overcame a see-saw Kentucky primary battle to take the nomination for U-S Senate.
The margin of victory was narrow as challenger Charles Booker surged amid national coverage of police brutality.
Booker had the backing of progressives for his stance on Medicare for All.
McGrath will mount a probable tempestuous campaign aimed at unseating Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the fall — a campaign that actually started during the primary push as both took potshots at the other.
