Across Florida, people observed the fourth anniversary of the PULSE killings with a statewide moment of silence this morning at 9:00.
Governor Ron DeSantis signed a proclamation declaring June 12 “Pulse Remembrance Day,” in honor of the 49 people who died and the more than 50 who were injured during a mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, a popular LGBTQ+ venue in Orlando in 2016. Until the Las Vegas country music concert shootings, it was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Shooter Omar Mateen was carrying an AR-15-type assault rifle and a handgun when he approached the club around 2:00 am. Mateen died in a shootout with police that day. An FBI spokesman said Mateen phoned emergency services during the attack and pledged allegiance to ISIS.
