De-escalation. It’s become a buzzword in light of the recent protests about police activity.
E-P-D Chief Billy Bolin says they already teach the principles of de-escalation, although there’s no reference to the term in their guidelines.
But Chief Bolin says it will be a point of emphasis moving forward.
Another topic central to the discussion will be the duty to intervene.
He says officers must be accountable to the community, and to each other.
Bolin says universal principles such as basic human decency and respect are at the heart of the discussion.
Civic leaders, as well as the leaders of the recent protests, have remarked how well things unfolded in Evansville, in contrast to protests in other cities which turned confrontational or violent.
