The team this year included veteran taste testers Jill
Trautvetter and Dr. Kurt Tillman and a new taster this year, Katelynne Edge one
of WIKY’s Account Executives.
1. Granted.
Instead of their legendary pork chop sandwich we tried their Pumpkin
Bread Pudding made for GaylaCakes exclusively for Granted. Bread pudding + pumpkin pie = brilliant.
2. Boy Scout Troop 399. Perhaps an addition to our
annual awards should be a category for snacks.
Then the homemade Kettle Corn and Apple Cider Slushy would be in the running
for sure.
3. Highland Boosters. They were the first with it on Franklin and
it was an award winner – the Pronto Brat.
Same as a pup only more German. Don’t
leave Fall Festival without one.
4. Nile Patrol. The Brain Booth. It’s the only booth that needs volunteers to
control the line of people waiting for their annual Fall Festival Nile Patrol
Brain Sandwich. Inducted into WIKY’s
Legends of the Fall Festival Booth Hall of Fame.
5. Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). A Fall Festival food that’s seen a major rise
in recent years is the Pork Parfait. Layers of mashed potatoes, pulled pork and
well it’s all layered like an ice cream parfait. You’re right; it does sound
good (and is)!
6. Holy Redeemer. This one was a hit with our taste
testers – Chicken Fried Bacon. It’s bacon breaded and fried. It’s a major breakthrough in bacon
technology.
7. There is no booth 7. This is a vacant spot this
year because it’s been reported to us that some organizations have difficulty
getting enough volunteers to handle the work for Fall Festival week. It’s truly a daunting task. Hopefully, this spot will see a new
non-profit move in next year.
8. Eagles View Church. Home of the award winner Stuffed Pepper Soup,
we tried their Loaded Cheese Fries. Ooey gooey cheese goodness with the pepper
soup part of the ensemble. Homemade Cinnamon
Rolls and Kuchen too.
9.Perry Heights. Aloha Balls. You’ll want to dance
the hula after trying this past award winner. Beef meatballs in a secret island
sauce with crushed pineapple and sprinkled with Mozzarella. Surf’s up!
10. Daniel Wertz.
West Side Waffle Fries made with seasoned waffle batter then topped with a
cheese sauce, crushed Grippos, natch and drizzled with “Ski reduction,” an ingredient
that’s made its way into more and more Fall Festival foods. Excellent.
11. The Nutty Bar booth. Last commercial booth left after Sam the Ham
Man passed on. Excellent ice cream treat and the booth supports local
charities.
12. West Side Sportsmen. Simply among the very best Pronto Pup’s at
Fall Festival. Big dog, perfect batter, expertly deep fried. Include this on
your Pup list this week.
13. Unitarian Universalist Church of Evansville. For
the 4
th
year their Sticky Rice with Mango. A sweet Asian treat for
those who like something a little more exotic.
14. First Christian Church. Homemade Fudge and Divinity.
Lots of flavors. The peanut butter is
wonderful and this is the way Divinity is supposed to taste – heavenly smooth.
15.Hadi Funsters. Chocolate Covered Clown Nose. An absolutely
brilliant and delicious treat featuring red velvet cake covered in chocolate.
Great for the kids too!
*16. Potter’s Wheel. Kraut Balls. But wait, you say,
I’ve had kraut balls before. No, actually you haven’t until you’ve tried these.
It’s a homemade recipe with a wonderfully mellow medley of kraut ball flavors. This calls for repeat visits. *Best of the Festival 3rd Place, 2019.
17. Pleasant Chapel General Baptist Church. Fire and
Brimstone Deep Fried Bosco Sticks. They’ve taken the Bosco Stick to another
level.
18. Emmanuel Lutheran. Their legendary Chicken and Dumplings.
The line to get yours starts early in the day and goes until it runs out every
night. Try ‘em and you’ll see why it’s so worth the wait.
19. Substance Abuse Council. Cheesy Cheddar Grits.
New item this year and a hit with our tasting team. Three choices with your
grits – pulled pork, bacon or of course, shrimp.
20.Church of the Harvest. Bacon Wrapped Pronto Pup.
OK, it’s a hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep fried. THEN dipped in pronto
batter and deep fried AGAIN. It’s Super Pronto Pup!
21. Bethel Church Missions. Pronto Pup. An excellent
execution of the Fall Festival favorite and one that Katelynne, one of our team
members, had never had! So her first
Pronto Pup will be forever compared to this one by Bethel and she’s pleased
with that.
22. St. James
UMC West. Corn Fritters. Perfect homemade fritters with plenty of nibs on the
inside. Maple syrup for dipping. For years a tradition and it’s been a past
award winner for its perfectly tasting simplicity.
23. German Township Booster Club. Bread Pudding with
Whiskey Sauce and Whipped Cream…provided by the Feedmill in Morganfield. Yum!
24. Bethany Christian. Multi award winner booth
(WIKY’s Golden Acorn Award in 2018 for the Best of the Festival for their incredible
Bread Pudding). This year we tried the West Side Chilidog with Cheese. Crushed
Grippos? Of course. And a spoon to eat this one. Killer.
25. St Theresa, Good Sheppard. Muchen Rolls with
Garlic Sauce. It’s telling when a sample of the food is given and instead of just
a taste, our judges finish the whole thing.
26. Evansville Professional Firefighters. Here’s a
booth that lives on the edge and every year they offer a crowd pleaser. The Flamin’ Peanut Butter Sausage Burger. It’s
a sausage patty with a tasty hot sauce that’s tempered by the peanut butter.
Trust us, it works and is a must try!
27. Sigma Tau Gamma. The USI fraternity is new to
this location after moving from the “annex” of booths across the street. They’re offering their Stromboli with the
option of “making it walk.” Yeah, a walking strom and it’s great.
28. St Joseph School PTO. Flaming Squealer. The name along, right? DeWig sausage with
pepper jack, jalapenos and Sirachi sauce. Squealing with delight!
29. Resurrection Church. Carmel Pecan Yum Yum. It’s a kuchen variation that delivers.
30. St Paul’s Episcopal. Pulled Pork offered either
as a sandwich or hay stack. Home smoked with homemade sauce. Great flavor.
31. St. Matthews. Fudge and Divinity. All homemade.
You can taste the love in every bite.
32. Central United Methodist. Ribeye Sandwich. But wait, this one is thin
sliced, tender ribeye from Old Tyme Deli. If ribeye is on your go to list at
Fall Festival, you need to give this one a try.
33. Salem Church, Darmstadt. Donut Sundae. Oh yeah. An ice cream sundae
starring a donut. Brilliant. (This is the home of the best German Potato Salad
at Fall Festival. Served warmed, the way it was intended).
34. West Side Christian Church. Pulled Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Not overpowering
on the buffalo. Judges liked this one.
