Mayor heading for Afghanistan to serve
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is leaving office but hopefully only for a while. He will be on active military duty in Afghanistan. The 31-year-old will serve as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve for Operation Enduring Freedom. Buttigieg is leaving February 28th and won’t return until October, but he says the work of his office will continue. Buttigieg says nothing underway will stop or pause during his absence. City Controller Mark Neal will serve as deputy mayor in charge of the city. You may recall that Buttigieg, a Democrat, was defeated by Republican Richard Mourdock of Vanderburgh County in a race for Indiana State Treasurer.
