Diabetes is a top killer disease and causes blindness, kidney disease, heart disease and amputations.  It has taken the likes of Johnny Cash and Bernie Mac long before their time.  Type I Diabetes was formally known as Juvenile on Set and insulin dependent.

Diabetes Statistics

  • 6.9 out of every 100 adults in Indiana has diabetes, ranking it 18th highest in the nation for the ratio of people with diabetes to the general population.
  • 27.5 out of every adult 100,000 deaths in Indiana are due to diabetes; ranking the 18th highest in the nation for deaths due to diabetes.
  • In 2005, 373,000 Indiana adults were diagnosed with diabetes and by 2007 9% of the total adult population had been diagnosed with diabetes

Diagnosed: 18.8 million people

Undiagnosed: 7.0 million people

Prediabetes: 79 million people*

New Cases: 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010.

* In contrast to the 2007 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, which used fasting glucose data to estimate undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes, the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet uses both fasting glucose and A1C levels to derive estimates for undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes. These tests were chosen because they are most frequently used in clinical practice.

3000 E Division St, Evansville, IN

Registration is open for the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center’s "iCan Bike" (formerly known as “Lose the Training Wheels”) bike-riding day camp.

iCan Bike is for children age 8 and up with mild to moderate disabilities and disabling conditions. The workshop is scheduled for July 15-19 at the Indiana National Guard Armory, 3300 Division St., Evansville.

Children attending “iCan Bike” learn to ride using a series of specially adapted bicycles. Each child attends for 1 ½ hours daily and receives one-on-one assistance from therapists and volunteers. By the end of the 5-day “bike camp”, most participants can ride a regular bike independently.

Cost per participant is $170, which includes the five-day “camp,” an “iCan Bike” t-shirt, and an approved safety helmet. Requests for fee reductions are accepted. Spots are limited, pre-registration is required and the deadline to sign up is July 1. Call Patty Balbach at 812-479-1411, ext. 268, for registration information and to register.

Volunteers are also needed to assist children with disabilities as they participate in “iCan Bike.” Volunteers must be 16 or older, be able to walk/run next to a child on a bike (indoors and outdoors), and be available for complete morning sessions (8am-12:15pm), complete afternoon sessions (1-4pm), or both.
