Jack-o-lanterns in the 21st Century
It seems the first time I saw anybody do something really different with pumpkin carving for Halloween was on the old Roseanne show. The show featured incredible pumpkins carved to look like Frankenstein, Dracula, and a haunted house. They were very clever and looked terrific. I also remember reading about another pumpkin artist who used a laser to minutely carve amazing detail in his pumpkins.
This year, someone new. I got this from a friend and it answers a lingering question - what would happen if a folk artist type wood carver tried his hand at a pumpkin? Here's the answer -

Artist Ray Villafane began carving pumpkins on a lark for his art students in a small rural school district in Michigan . The hobby changed his life as he gained a viral following online and unlocked his genuine love of sculpting.
