Maxine's Cafe & Bakery on Green River Road was one of my favorite lunch spots in the Tri-State, so I was very bummed when I found out they were closing after 24 years.  The economy and increased competition were just a couple of reasons the owners decided to pull the plug.  It was a cute place with wonderful, homemade food, and I will dearly miss it.

So, I tried to re-create their curried chicken salad....since it was my absolute favorite.  Here's the recipe I came up with:

3 boneless, skinless chicken breats

3 stalks celery, chopped

Henderson Police have sent us a picture of a young boy, approximately 3 years old, who was found wandering in the area of 1400 Young Street in Henderson.

They say they cannot locate his parents.

They're asking us to share the photo and have our listeners call 911 if they can identify.  The child is currently in the custody of DCBS and police.  Contact us at 812-451-2104 or 1-800-454-WIKY. <DIV style="MARGIN-TOP: 14

My wife and daughter are sick, Diane’s had the creeping crud for a couple of weeks.  I don’t have a prayer staying healthy.  Or do I?  Here’s some tips we discussed on the WIKY Morning Show from iVilliage.com -

#1.)  Keep Your Feet Warm.  Researchers think cold feet might cause the blood vessels in your SINUSES to tighten up.  Which makes it harder for white blood cells to get to your mucus membranes.  And that's where most viruses sneak in.

#2.)  After You Wash Your Hands, Don't Dry Them

On the WIKY Morning Show we had a discussion on home remedies.  It started with the old belief that an onion will absorb all the evils in the air including cold and flu viruses.  That's been around since the 1500s.  Yes, that long even though there's no evidence that it works.  Actually, it doesn't even make sense to me.  An onion?  Really?  However, one that appears to have some benefit is the consumption of gin soaked golden raisins for arthritis relief.  Our pal Charlie has done it for a while and he says he feels a difference.  Lot of listene

I believe the "Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas" politically correct thing is a completely manufactured problem.  For years I was blissfully unaware that saying Merry Christmas was offending anyone.  Why?  Because I've never encountered anyone who was offended by it.  And what's wrong the phrase "Happy Holidays?"  It's always been a nice way to give blanket greetings at the end of the year for all the goodwill the big three - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day - have come to represent.

We received a number of calls Monday morning from folk north and west of Evansville who wanted to know what the loud booms were Saturday evening - a rolling thunder type of sound coming from the north.  Well, it was a private fireworks show.  A family near Haubstadt out by the St James area with plenty of acreage and a lake put on a fireworks show every year for the Fourth of July for friends and neighbors.  Since it was too dry on July 4 to set ‘em off, they decided to do it Saturday night.  About 200 folks were there and if you heard the distant “thunder” it was their

Here's Tuesday's report from the 91st Fall Festival.  Not as rainy today so a noticeably larger crowd.  A big thanks to my judges Carla Kratz, Casey Hahn, Kathy Collins, Lisa and Don Swenson.  Lisa is Kathy's sister and grew up on the Westside but Don is from Siren, Wisconsin where they both now live.  Lisa was thrilled to be back for a Fall Festival, this was Don's first.  He's was a trooper too, never a complaint and was extremely impressed with the enormous selection.  You gotta love a guy who embraces the Fall Festival immediately, right?

The 91st West SIde Nut Club Fall Festival takes place all next week on Evansville's West Side and again WIKY will be sampling every food booth on Franklin Street.  We assemble three teams of listener volunteers, one with Diane, one with Mark Evans, and my team, with each required to visit about 22 booths per day.  We hit the street Monday at 11 for about an hour or so and by Tuesday at 12:30, we've sampled all the booths.  We originally thought we could do it all in one day but come on, that would be inhuman.  We don't sample every

We heard last week a disturbing rumor that the Log Inn was closing.  What?  An entire region denied fine fried chicken?  Say it ain't so!

OK, it ain't so.  We heard from Rita Elpers, whose family has owned the Log Inn for these many years, and she told us that not only had she heard the rumor (and would love to know where it started) but it's totally false.  She and her family (the next generation of Elpers have already taken over day to day operations

It turns out Labor Day is NOT a day set aside to honor the mother of the Osmond family.  Imagine my surprise.  No, it's celebration of American labor and for decades the Labor Day Association has held a big traveling bash with rides, fair food, a parade and more over the Labor Day weekend.  This year it's being held at the Pike County Fairgrounds and gets underway Friday and runs through Monday.  Here's the rundown for this year's celebration - http://www.labordayassoc.com/events.asp (Remember that Pike Country i

We welcomed our good friend Jimmy Lefler on the WIKY Morning Show today to chat about the second annual 100 Men Who Cook event August 25 at the Centre.  It's brought to you by Old National Bank and this year the proceeds benefit Gilda's Club of Evansville.  What's 100 Men Who Cook?  Just what you'd think: 100 business and civic leaders get together and each cooks a dish and spends a lot of time and effort presenting it in a spectacular fashion.  Diane's husband Jeff Thompson, WIKY's own Mark Elliott and me are among the 100 men.  Your ticket price gets you into

There are plenty of people upset about the local fireworks bans this year due to the weather conditions.  It’s perfectly understandable, too.  Some folks just can’t celebrate Independence Day properly without cutting loose a few bottle rockets or Roman candles.  But for me, it’s been a lifetime ban on fireworks so I’m not so upset.  My cousin Mike, a number of years my senior, threw a firecracker into a ditch when he was a kid, a rock flew out and yes, he actually PUT HIS EYE OUT!  He’s had a glass eye ever since.

Over the years on the WIKY Morning Show, we’ve had some fun with random items observed on our daily commutes to work.  It started with a random boot Diane noticed in the median of the Lloyd on the West Side and mentioned it on the air.  The random boot in the road - we’ve all see them.

We were discussing birds in my backyard this morning on WIKY.  I've been a bird watcher for years.  I've heard that you're supposed to call yourself a "birder" but that sounds even weirder than bird watcher, if you ask me.

We have a mockingbird that lives in our backyard and has for years.  She's actually just relocated from next door because the bush she lived in for years was the victim of a landscaping make-over.  So she moved right into a small Cleveland pear tree that was planted a couple of years ago and stands only 10 feet max making it&nbsp

A cup of coffee on the patio a little past dawn Saturday morning, still up well before everyone else.  I remembered that I started doing it in high school – getting out of bed and ready before everyone else.  The reasons were obvious – a shower with guaranteed hot water, first crack at anything for breakfast (especially advantageous for pop tarts or Wheaties in short supply,) and maybe twenty minutes of the Three Stooges before the bus came.  Granted, it was a challenge beating my dad out of bed.  A lifetime in the Army had provided few opportunities for luxurious slumbe

With the passing of Dick Clark I remembered a number of years ago getting a package in the mail with a 50th anniversary keychain for American Bandstand.  It had the famous AB logo on one side in blue and "50 years of Bandstand" on the reverse.  With it a handwritten note from Dick thanking me for my support over the years.  It was just so cool.  I wore that keyring out in my pocket and had to retire it when the loop broke.  Dick Clark was one of my heroes.

The new Three Stooges movie did a respectable showing on its opening weekend at the box office.  Good enough for a distant second behind the now steamrolling Hunger Games.  The Farrelly brothers loving tribute to Moe, Larry, and Curly got generally mixed reviews - some liked it a lot, others not so much.  Our listeners told us that it was probably more enjoyed by the adults in the audience than the kids (who found 3 grown men slapping each other around a bit puzzling).  Leonard Matlin, a respected critic found the movie very much like a Beatlemania performance

Bob Warren, Executive Director of the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau and Laura Libbs, CVB’s Director of Marketing and Communication dropped by the WIKY Morning Show today to wish the city of Evansville a happy 200th birthday!  The actual birthday takes place tomorrow, March 27, with two big parties to mark the event.  The first is at the Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe) from 10am – 2pm and will feature magician Don Baggett, live entertainment by the Duke Boys, a Bicentennial cake-off among local bakeries and a great photo-op of mayors of Evansville, pas

With the 2012 severe weather season starting with a bang, it's time to seriously review your family's emergency plan.  Everyone should know exactly where to go in a weather emergency and if possible, to get there in 30 seconds or less.  You need a flashlight (with working batteries,) a NOAA weather radio, and if you have a smart phone, download the free app Tune In, which allows you to listen to WIKY on your phone.  During a severe weather outbreak we simulcast WFIE-14's wall-to-wall weather coverage so you'll have a source of information at the ready
